Morgan plastered on a smile as the chime sounded, announcing a customer entering Lafayette’s Teas and Reads. Summoning smiles grew more difficult by the day. It wasn’t that she hated serving customers—quite the opposite, in fact. It was the ones who wanted readings with their spiced chais who caused her shoulders to tighten with dread.

Six weeks ago, she didn’t have a problem. Six weeks ago, she didn’t need the tea leaves swirling at the bottom of a cup to give a customer a reading. Six weeks ago, she’d been whole and nightmare-free and not breaking a hematite ring every three days from stress and negativity. But that was then, before her gift had fractured under the pressure of bearing witness to a gruesome murder and the taint of Shadow that had drenched it.

The door chimed again, so she smiled again. That smile froze as her mother, father, and grandmother entered the shop. For the matriarch of the Lafayette clan to come to River Street, much less downtown Savannah, wasn’t all that unusual though she usually asked Morgan to bring her something home. To have the matriarch come with Morgan’s father, Senior Director of the Gilead Commission’s southeast coastal region, meant something was wrong. Given the way they looked at her, that something was her.
