Teaser Tuesday: a little more SPICE!

In SPICE, Kane and Nadia get together to reenact scenes from a medieval Arabic sex manual known as The Perfumed Garden of Sensual Delights.   In the late 1800’s it was wildly embellished by Sir Richard Burton for his Kama Shastra Society.  You can view the Burton text online at www.sacred-texts.org or a translation of the original at Archive.org

For some people, having love like a drug is the ultimate. For Nadia Spiceland, it’s reason to run. She co-owns Sugar and Spice bakery and café. Along with her partner Siobahn “Sugar” Malloy, she creates signature soups and couture confections for the coeds and businesspeople that call Crimson Bay home. It’s a far cry from her rise and fall as a celebrity chef and reality TV star, and three years after her stint in drug rehab, she’s learned that strictly controlling all aspects of her life is the safest way to play it.

But a woman has needs, and Nadia is ready for…not a relationship, but the benefits that come with it. Like a steady supply of sex. She wants excitement, someone capable of uninhibited and passionate sex. Someone she can cede this one area of her life to. Someone who knows what The Perfumed Garden is. Her friends challenge her to jump into the deep end, and who better to jump with than Professor Sex?

Doctor Kaname Sullivan, professor of Human Sexuality Studies at the nearby college, is known as Dr. Sex by the abundance of female coeds crowding his classes. A frequent customer, he’s had his eye on Nadia for weeks. After overhearing the ladies’ conversation, he tells Nadia that not only does he know the details of The Perfumed Garden, he’s more than able to help her discover it. Their connection is immediate and consuming, but to Nadia there’s a difference in being an expert on sex and an expert at sex. Intrigued and more than willing to jumpstart her stifled love life, Nadia agrees to meet the professor at dinner.

The man she meets at the restaurant is even more magnetic than the man she knows at the cafe: alluring, sexy, masterful. This man is one she wants to uncover and discover—if he’s worth it, and if he can accept the fact that she’s a rehab graduate. When he professes no issues with her past, she hands him a wireless vibrator controller. Kane more than rises to the challenge. Before their tapas arrive she is thrumming with need, but Kane keeps her on the edge of bliss, quoting passages from a variety of erotic texts to lure her further into his sensual web. After dinner they share their first kiss in the parking lot, a kiss so fiery it is all they can do to make it to Nadia’s condo. There, they both unleash barely restrained passion, leaving each other breathless and wanting more.

I’m Jammin

(I’m not the only one who heard the Bob Marley song, right?)

I’ve finished my last big writing project (aside from revisions) until summer, so I thought I’d take a breather by doing a little redesign of my authorial self.

This past weekend I took a workshop hosted by Georgia Romance Writers that was given by Margie Lawson. If you ever have the opportunity to take one of her many workshops, do so. She has great insights on how to make writing better, to move beyond cliche when telling a story, to add more interest, depth and visceral reaction to the story one tells. Since I love taking my characters on emotional journeys, I plan to incorporate some of the knowledge Margie dropped into my upcoming projects.

Speaking of upcoming projects…I’ve been doing some work in that direction too. It occurs to me that the best way for me to move forward in my writing career is to give this hybrid author thing a shot. And by shot, I mean jump in with eyes open, nose held, using both feet! For those who know me, this is hilarious, because I can’t swim at all, despite the numerous people who have attempted to teach me. That won’t keep me from getting in the water though!

I have some wonderful writing friends who have blazed the trail, so my path is definitely smoother than it would have been even a year ago, but I now feel that I’m in a place where I can make this happen.

So I’ve officially became a small business owner by launching my own LLC. There’s something giddy and freeing about that.  I don’t know why–I’ve been published for fourteen years come this November with twenty publishing credits to my name. But that LLC says “I am serious business owner, P&L, output, assets, product, sells!” and

I’m doing some wheelin’ and dealin’, some writin’ and revisin’, getting my building blocks in order to make some new out of the tools I’ve been using for years. If you’re going to Romance Slam Jam, you’ll see what I mean in some of the promo material I’ll have with me. Please do stop by my table on Saturday and say hi! Or, you know, come sit in on my workshop about Writing Novellas. I think I know a couple of things about getting those done!

If you’re not going to Slam Jam, you could find out what I have in store by taking a peek around my redesigned website.  I hope you like what I have in mind–soon to be in store!

Cover Reveal: SPICE

Nadia Spiceland works in the business of temptation. The confections she crafts at the Sugar and Spice Bakery and Café lure in the locals. But one customer is interested in more than just her delectable sticky buns…

Kane Sullivan teaches human sexuality at the nearby college, where coeds are clamoring for seats in his lectures. Nadia is reluctant to his advances, yet she also has needs. Who better to fulfill them than the man who’s referred to as “Dr. Sex” by his female students?

Soon Kane creates a hunger in Nadia that nothing can satiate. It weakens her, and that’s something she cannot risk. Not again. But Kane’s masterful touch might just be powerful enough to melt her heart—and free her to trust again…

Bye 2013, Hello 2014!

2013 was a great year, especially since I didn’t have anything published in 2012 and wondered if I’d already seen my last word in print. Glad I kicked Doubt’s ass!

My alter ego and I saw three novellas and one novel published electronically in 2013. For some that might be a pittance, but for me, that was full of awesome! (especially after the drought of 2012, which really started in late 2010.) I wrote more words this year than I had in 2011 and 2012 COMBINED, and I plan to break that record in 2014.

This summer my alter ego and I both got contracts thanks to my fabo agent, which for now is the highpoint of my career–two contracts for two names/series from two different houses. I laughed, I cried, I freaked the hell out.

In 2014, I’ll see the print version of the 2013 novel, three electronic novellas, and one print novel published. That will be a personal best for me. But if I can swing it, I hope it will also see my first self-published efforts, two novellas that launch series with characters my readers are already familiar with.  If any of you are planning to attend Romance Slam Jam, I’ll be breaking the news and sharing the covers there.

The idea of seeing six new publishing credits is inspiring and motivating and stress-inducing all at once! But I am looking forward to the challenge and reaping the results of my endeavors.

All of that to say this: 2013 was a great year for me, and 2014 looks to be the same. THANK YOU for being a part of my journey!

“There, that should do it.” Rana smoothed the bandage in place, then smiled up at the jackal shifter. “You can take the wrap off tomorrow morning and apply the ointment again. After lunch, feel free to shift.”

“Thank you, priestess.” The young jackal smiled, holding his bandaged forearm. “It feels better already. You surely have a magical touch.”

“You’re welcome,” she said, grabbing her chart to make a few final notes. The young guard—at least, he seemed young—had entered the infirmary with a six inch gash in his arm, given to him by another guard during combat training. “How long does it normally take you to heal from your wounds when you shift into your jackal form?”

“Well, usually—” Suddenly he stiffened, eyes widening. A whimper seeped from his throat as he dropped his gaze.

Concerned with his abrupt change in demeanor, Rana reached out to touch his carotid artery. “Are you all right?”

Power rolled through the infirmary a split second before a warning growl did. Rana dropped her hand, suppressing a shiver as she recognized the distinctive signature of the magical energy weighing down the air. He was here.

She turned to see Hector, the jackals’ second-in-command, filling the doorway. The large jackal growled again. “Remain away from your post for much longer and I can guarantee you will be in desperate need of a healer.”

The words were soft, almost negligent, but only a fool would ignore the threat woven in them. The young guard was no fool. “My apologies, captain, I’ll return straightaway.” He beat a hasty retreat, Hector’s glower boring into him.

The shifter captain stepped into the exam room, turning the full weight of his silvery-green gaze to Rana. She stopped, stared, her duties forgotten.

Hector was stunning—in looks, in effect. Six feet, three inches of solid, sleek muscle, olive skin highlighting his Greek-Egyptian heritage, and gray-green eyes beneath thick brows and dark brown hair that seemed perpetually wind-tossed. She knew that he was roughly two thousand years old, and his power was potent, heady.

Awareness tingled along her nerve endings, awareness of him. Every time she saw him, her breath caught in her throat, her blood heated and her palms grew damp. A month into her stay at the jackal compound and she was still struck mute by his nearness. He made her feel like a girl in the first blush of womanhood, not a priestess over three hundred years old.

Most of the Sons of Anubis were politely distant in a could-rip-your-throat-out sort of way. They all seemed fiercely protective and focused on their duties, something that she, a Daughter of Isis, could appreciate.

Hector, however, was…more. Large and lethal, he radiated danger and intensity even when standing still. The infirmary, six large beds and two cages flanked by new state-of-the-art equipment, seemed too small to contain the full force of his energy. She only had to look at him to know that he fiercely committed to everything he did and accepted nothing less than a successful outcome.

He wore a simple white t-shirt and dark cargo pants, but on him they were a king’s raiment. The white cotton emphasized his broad shoulders, defined arms, taut abs. Isis have mercy.
